Overview. ThemesThe day showcases the latest research by students and researchers of SUN's Tygerberg medical campus. Researchers from across disciplinary borders come together to discuss issues of importance to South Africa and the rest of the world. Seven parallel themes and poster exhibitions are presented:
The themes correspond to the strongest research areas in the Faculty and align with National Department of Health's 'quadruple burden of disease', the conditions that contribute most to morbidity and mortality in South Africa. All sessions include State-of-the-Art lectures, by experts in the themes, including the AJ Brink Presentation, the Dean's address and a guest lecture. |
PostersNSB post-graduates will present 4 posters. The Learning Curve for LIMS implementationA case study at the NHLS-Stellenbosch Biobank (NSB) Timothy Reid, Dr Carmen Swanepoel, Catherine Roussouw, Lemoene Smit, Prof Alan Christoffels, Prof Akin Abayomi A LIMS is the heartbeat of any biobank, for without it, biobank is essentially a room full of freezers. We partnered with Bika Lab Systems, in association with SANBI to build a LIMS solution from the ground up. The inital phase focused on standards for LIMS implementation with emphasis on six divisions: sample management, data collection, data query, security and administration management, data integration, and data analysis. The NSB project aims to set up biobanking infrastructure in South Africa, and Africa, streamlining and harmonizing bioinformatics and biobanking infrastructure to support genomic research. Locally, biobanking in South Africa has gained momentum catalyzed by genomic researchers who place increasing emphasis on data and sample quality, a major focus in the modern biobank. The NSB BiorepositoryThe NSB, Tygerberg Hospital, is a registered and operational biobank, initially funded by NIH H3Africa, under Prof Akin Abayomi and Dr. Carmen Swanepoel. The biobank is a collaboration with Stellenbosch University, National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), SA National Bioinformatics Institute (SANBI) at the University of Western Cape, Rutgers University, the Scripps Research Institute for Regenerative Medicine, as well as other divisions within the Pathology Department.
