Actually. That took a bit longer
3 March, Cape Town Last year this time It has been that long since the previous post when we rotated the PM triangle colours. They seem stuck now, on Slow, Good and Cheap, will be for long if not ever, there are robots afoot... and wash your hands MilestonesProminent ones at this stage not many, a few projects are lifting off and the code will be curated into the Senaite and Bika addon repositories 2017 ISO COAsWe were caught off guard by 2017's ISO 17025 COA requirements but are making steady progress. Alas, 21 CFR part 11 compliant electronic signatures awaits The new COA spun off a stub for a Subcontracting feature, used on only the COAs for now, to be expanded later. Unique COA IDs as employed in Bika Water earlier, are back too. More information at the Bika user forum

Bika DairyWe started work on LIMS for Dairy and Veterinary analysis relevant to food safety and herd health. It requires animal patients, but not as extensively as in Bika/Senaite Health Ditto for Vets, who in this workflow fulfil more of a final verification role before results are posted to herd owners Batch* processing is a critical requirement. 1000 Samples at a time arrive when 250 cows in a herd are sampled on all four udder quarts... We therefore decided to start on Bika/Senaite LIMS instead. From a technical point already this clearly postulates a new branch, Bika Dairy? The project is sponsored by new GreenHill laboratories. A green field:) development too, and opportunity not frequently encountered, what a pleasure to work on New modern instruments, and taming closed source Perkin Elmer D Link middleware for interfacing the Delta Lactoscope and Perten Somascope somatic cell counter. Bruker's Maldi Biotyper 2 - impressive, automation in microbiology has come a long way - is interfaced directly, bidirectionally When GreenHill in a next phase start doing diagnostic veterinary analysis too, there is every reason for the lab to also employ Bika Health - no extra license fees - as veterinary cases and more patient demographics are needed In instances like the dreaded African horse sickness, bovine Foot and Mouth disease, Bika Health's epidemiology features will come in handy too * Bulk Sample uploadAbsolutely necessary thus. Two tier Sampling PointsSampling dairy cows also requires a two tier sample point hierarchy, desired in LIMS for some time now. For example, water sampling per town, Location, and in Tribology, sampling points per machine or transformer, Sample Source. Having Patients In Bika Health theoretically resolves the issue, say having venipuncture sites on patients' bodies from where blood is drawn LIMS pricing
In a market research exercise, not always sentimental FOSS enthusiasts' cup of tea, enforced for a grant application, revealed once again just how far Professional Open Source outstrips proprietary options, even before the the freedoms of unlimited users, unlimited servers for that matter, to customise sans vendor lock-in enter the fray. Summarised in forum post Economy of scale is driving prices down generally, and there is a noticeable swing to service based pricing, but a long way to go as more labs see the emperor's licensing naked -----8<----------------------------------------------------------------------- Same Same, but different. A new home for the user list at users.bikalims.org where among others, above topics are discussed. The bika-user list migrated there from Interweb legends Sourceforge and GNU Mailman recently That valuable searchable vault of knowledge remain online. Unlike the new forum, it is difficult to navigate though, and Google finds information there quicker The 'Community" concept has been abused way too often, and hinting at 'Plonistas' advancing Plone, and cattle as traditional currency, the forum best be known as the Bika Corral For Open Source LIMS Bikaneros |
